Back in 2012 I was an excited spectator in Barcelona, at the World Junior Champs. I had been asked by Athletics New Zealand to undertake as many finish-line interviews as possible of our team's athletes.
One of my fondest memories was talking several times with Portia Bing (she has only just now completed two days of competition in the Heptathlon, garnering several PBs along the way). Jacko Gill excelled in his own event, battling past a Pole, determined to supplant Jacko as world's best young Shot exponent: Jacko had to be content with 8th place here in Beijing.
I also remember well the enthralling contest that was the men's Pole Vault: where three high flying young guys were separated by fewer failures for the medals. They all managed to clear 5.55m, and the bronze went to the Canadian, Shawn Barber: yesterday he dominated these World Champs!
