• Day 9 - more and more FINALS!

14 August at 06:35 from atlas

Entering the last weekend of these Championships, and the intensity is at the maximum, with elite athletes vying for the medals on offer. The men's 5000m was the headline act, with Mo Farah GBR in front of his home crowd, on the track which had seen several of his previous outstanding victories - but not this time, as Muktar Edris ETH spoiled the locals' celebrations. No matter, Farah has secured his place in the annals of athletics superstars for the future.

Behind Idriss and Farah were two youngsters destined to become household names in the future - Selemon Barega ETH (20-Jan-00) who finished 5th and Aron Kifle ERI (20-Feb-98) 7th.

The day had other startling accomplishments worth noting: javelin throwing by the best guys, at the top of their game, with 2017 world-leading German, Johannes Vetter only just holding onto the gold from two Czech athletes, Jakub Vadlejch and Peta Frydrych, plus his team-mate Thomas Rohler - those four placings covered by just 1.63m!

In the gruelling, two-day Decathlon, Frenchman Kevin Mayer was consistent throughout, and emerged as the winner, some 200+ points clear of second. While the men's 4x100m Relay finally put the lid on Usain Bolt's illustrious career with the great man pulling up lame on the final leg, and writhing in agony on the track - not what he had hoped for, I'm sure.
