Simply because it's nearly the end of the athletics season, doesn't mean that the athletes have given up on performing great deeds - just ask Selemon Barega of Ethiopia. He took on a quality field in Bruxelles at the Memorial Van Damme - grand final #2 of the IAAF Diamond League for 2018.
What transpired was the fourth-fastest outing ever around 12 1/2 laps, a win by more than two seconds, and also leading a procession of his countryman (including second-place finisher Hagos Gebrhiwet, holder of the old record mark of 12:47.53).
In running 12:43.02, Barega reduced that mark by a massive 4.51 seconds and elevated himself into hallowed territory on the World All-Time list! The only question remaining is whether he is capable of breaking the as-yet unrivaled mark of 12:37.35 set by the legendary Kenenisa Bekele, also of Ethiopia, back in May 2004... in my humble opinion, I can see him achieving that within the next 2 years, in the lead-up to the Tokyo Olympics.
