Everyone in Stadion Zawisza watched spellbound as Luis Enrique Zayas completed 8, yes eight, first-time clearances to secure the gold medal in the high jump (following in the footsteps of his countryman and still World Record-Holder, Javier Sotomayor, who was World Junior Champion back in 1986 at Athens, the inaugural meeting).

Starting his foray at 2.05m he barely hesitated at each height to 2.27m - sure he DID fail (at 2.29m), but by then his fellow jumpers had all capitulated!
